Narrative Art
Narrative art is the art of showing or telling stories. Narrative is defined by a way of presenting or understanding a situation or series of events that describes, reflects, or questions a particular point of view or set of values. This understanding can be through the spatial arts like painting or the temporal arts involving the written word.
Humanity is a species which relies on our narratives. We tell stories constantly. Stories are our touchstones to dreaming of a world to come and then making that dream come true. Narratives help us understand our reality and belief systems. Art has been mostly narrative, up until the twentieth century. Telling stories of religion, myth, and history; the greatest examples being, The Last Supper, Sistine Chapel ceiling, and the Passage of the Delaware. Then in the 1900’s with the Abstract Expressionist movement, art moved away from representation and toward formal qualities of art. Since then, narrative art has had a negative connotation in the art world. Although, there were still references to political and cultural beliefs in art. Pablo Picasso’s Guernica is a prime example describing the bombing by Nazis of a Basque Country village in northern Spain, during the Spanish Civil War.
Sean's narrative art investigates trends, myth, ideology and naturalized semiotic codes in American culture: through a futurist lens. The theme encompasses futuristic imaginings, fanciful modern myths, and potential global catastrophes. The artist tells stories of truth and tragedy. He creates works that yell up to the heavens for answers. He channels what can only be labeled as the divine. He examines the human condition, and how that condition fosters a Metamodern landscape: influenced by choice, acted upon by belief, ignorance, and sometimes evil. Yet, joy somehow finds its way to the fore in small enticing ways. The result is a body of work that has a majestic beautiful grandeur. He endeavors to show story spatially through (painting, video, digital art) and tell stories temporally through (poetry, lyrical sonic art).
